Researcher– Forest Ecology and Management, KU Leuven, Department of Bioscience Engineering. Overview

You will establish an international‑level research program focused on developing quantitative solutions for the monitoring, conservation, and multifunctional management of forests. The program will address the optimization of ecosystem services such as climate regulation, wood production and biodiversity by creating engineering solutions tailored to challenges like climate and land use changes, societal and economic needs.Responsibilities

Build a research group and develop national and international partnerships, including collaboration within the Division Forest, Nature, and Landscape on topics such as urban forestry, ecosystem restoration, digital twins, and biodiversity conservation. Obtain competitive funding to support PhDs and research activities, generate high‑quality publications, and achieve widespread recognition.Ensure the valorisation of research findings to support policy making regarding forest ecosystems at the Flemish and European level. Provide high‑quality education to Bachelor’s and Master’s students in the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, teaching courses such as ‘Forestry’, ‘Forest management’ and various field courses.Supervise student projects, including bachelor’s and master’s theses, and act as promoter of PhD students. Engage in scientific, societal and internal service activities, such as serving on the departmental council and promoting KU Leuven to prospective students and the wider professional field.Qualifications

PhD in Bioscience Engineering, Forestry, Ecology or a related discipline. Minimum 3 years of scientific research experience following the date of obtaining the doctorate. Demonstrable excellence and productivity in forest ecology and management research, with thorough field knowledge of temperate forests.Strong research profile evidenced by publications in prominent international journals and international research experience. A demonstrable network in relevant forest‑related research; experience with policy‑supporting activities is a strength. Strong organizational skills and the ability to foster a collaborative, collegial environment; leadership capacities within a university context.Demonstrable qualities for academic education; teaching experience is valued and supported. Clear vision for delivering high‑quality academic education in the field and dedication to the educational mission of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. Full‑time employment with a tenure‑track assistant professor position for five years, leading to a permanent appointment upon positive evaluation.
